More appliance talk To pontificate a little more on why, in hindsight, I would have liked to have bought my own appliances I give you example no. 2: the refridgerator. The grate on the bottom was missing. AND we found out during the inspection that the ice maker didn't work. There's a water dispenser that we never use. I don't know why. It works... we just don't use it. But we use a Pur water filter anyway. So I guess that's part of the reason. For two years, we bought ice and put it into the ice maker container so we could get it from the fridge door. But the ice wasn't the shape of the hole, so it had trouble coming out. We looked into getting it fixed. We checked our new-home insurance stuff but of course, it didn't cover ice makers. Or ceiling fans. Anyway, to get it fixed would cost about $200. But we don't really use ice THAT much so we figured we'd just deal with it and maybe buy a new fridge later. It's a side-by-side and the freezer is so narrow that it's hard to get stuff in there. And forget frozen pizzas, they just don't fit. Anyway. One day, David (oh sorry, DARKSIDE) and I were sitting in the living room and heard a funny noise from the kitchen. We look at each other but didn't think much of it. Later, for some reason, Darkside looks into the ice maker. "Hey!," he says. "The freezer is MAKING ICE!" "NU UH!" Surely not! But it WAS! IT WAS MAKING ICE. Oh happy day. Now I could make smoothies anytime I wanted! I called my dad who laughed and laughed because he'd tried to fix it for us. We bought some part -- and I think he made the water feature work on the fridge. I think I remember that it didn't work before that. We were hoping that if we got the water line working that we could get the ice maker working, but it didn't work out back then. He said we could buy some other $80 part and MAYBE it would fix it but we opted not to. And now?! ICE! Also, dad said "I'd throw out the first couple batches!" And we did. It's nice to have ice. Oh and we found the grate in the shed and we found out why they didn't have it on there. Something was broken on it. But we've taped it onto the fridge. And you can't even tell. And no it's not with duct tape or black tape. So, Nabbalicious, I too am glad that we did have these appliances to get us through. And they work, so I can't complain too much. But it's definitely been trial and error. And I am my mother's daughter after all. We like nice things. I was asking her about how to clean my washing machine yesterday (her first response was "What do you mean!?") and she asked me what the drum was made of. I don't know, I told her. She asked if it's plastic, enamel or stainless steel. I pecked on it. It's white and it pings. "Enamel," she said. "Um why?," I asked her. Because, she said. Buttons and snaps can get stuck in the holes in the plastic ones and tear the holes. The enamel can chip, but the STAINLESS STEEL is the BEST. And they hardly make them like THAT anymore. But she has one. Hahahaha! So see, it could be worse. Next up, I'll tell you about the stove.
